Pursuing Rock and Roll Dreams through Nescafe 3-in-1 Soundskool

posted by Sharlyne Ang on October 6th, 2009 under Events, Filipino Bands

I’ve been listening to local bands since I was young and just like an ordinary kid who admired bands; I wanted to have my own. Living near the guitar shops in Sta. Mesa gave me hope that one day, I will have my own guitar. And so, I did have one. My parents surprised me one day with a guitar lying on our sofa coming home from school. I was in my 5th grade then. I learned to play the guitar on my own from the song hits lying around the house. Those chord charts at the centrefold really helped me hone my guitar playing. Eventually, my dad enrolled me to a music school to learn classical guitar playing. I got bored with it, so after a year, I decided to self-study and played my favourite rock tunes. Then high school came, I was active in playing the guitar for the school choir. I was enjoying it, but still, no band mates. Then I entered college, there were lots of potential band mates however time did not permit me because I was busy balancing studies and org activities. Read the rest of this entry »

San Miguel Beermen, Executives and Oktobabes Ceremonial Beer Toast

“Times may be difficult but for fun-loving Filipinos, life goes on”.

This is San Miguel Beer’s press release for this year which I believe is very relevant on what is happening in the country today due to the recent super typhoon Ondoy. But even though how difficult our lives may have been and will be, we Filipinos still manage to smile.

The recent San Miguel Oktoberfest Party happened last September 25 at the Coyuito Parking Lot in Ortigas Center, was the night the rains our pouring non-stop. I thought that the event will be canceled but they pushed it through. We were sheltered by the air-conditioned tent that San Miguel provided. Read the rest of this entry »

National Geographic Presents: Asia’s Titanic Directed by Yam Laranas

December 20,1987. MV Doña Paz was on its way to Manila carrying more than 4000 passengers. The ship’s capacity was only for 1000+ passengers but because it’s the holiday season, they allowed more than the ship’s capacity. MV Doña Paz collided with an oil cargo ship called Vector leaving more than 4000 passengers dead and only 24 survivors. Sulpicio Lines denied (and is still denying) that MV Doña Paz was overloaded with passengers because according to their manifesto, only about a thousand were listed there. The Last Journey of Ninoy: As Told by Cory Aquino

posted by Sharlyne Ang on August 20th, 2009 under Events, Films

With the recent death of the former president, many of us did not know that she had an interview about her husband Ninoy Aquino months ago. It was supposed to be in preparation for the 25th anniversary of Ninoy’s death on August 21. This project was a collaboration of the Benigno Aquino Jr. Foundation and Unitel Productions as a tribute to the late hero of democracy.

Sugarfree, Isang Dekada Na!

posted by Sharlyne Ang on August 14th, 2009 under Events, Filipino Bands, gigs, sound trip

I would not forget how Sugarfree’s melodramatic lyrics have become the music of my wounding heart when I was young. Yeah, yeah, it’s emo right? But everybody undergoes through that phase. I did not even realize that it’s been a decade since Sugarfree existed. Does this mean I’m aging? Shux.

Anyway, Sugarfree is back with fresh new sounds and a 10th year anniversary concert. Isn’t that interesting? They have just recently released an album entitled “Mornings and Airports”. Another interesting thing about this album is that Chino David and Anjo Inacay of Silent Sanctuary (strings) and Richie Gonzaga of Corporate Lo Fi (Trumpet) guested in some tracks in the album.

The current single is “Hay Buhay”. I first heard that song performed live last January (during the Rock Bosch gig) and now I believe it’s being played in major radio stations (the only thing I’m sure of is that it’s being played at NU 107). The album will be launched on August 19 at Saguijo. Read the rest of this entry »

Politicalarena.com – Philippines’ First Socio-Political Website

posted by Sharlyne Ang on July 8th, 2009 under Commentaries, Events, modernity, personal, philippine society, public issue

The 2010 Philippine elections is just 10 months away and again, we need to choose a new president for the country. No one has confirmed that they are running for the presidency; obviously, they will be filing their certificate of candidacies on or weeks before the very last day of COC filing. Even though no one has confirmed yet who will be running either for president, vice-president or senators, we are already getting the hunch on who will be aiming for public office (again).

A socio-political networking website, www.politicalarena.com, is said to enlighten us voters (and aspiring voters) to know the background of politicians who, according to “public opinion”, will run on 2010. It’s the first of its kind here but it’s not owned by the Comission of Elections (COMELEC). This project is in partnership with 88db.com, meaning they funded the whole website.
