Silly Pop Gothic Tunes Courtesy of Tanya Markova

posted by Sharlyne Ang on May 12th, 2010 under Filipino Bands, Reviews, sound trip

Tanya Markova’s album is my current LSS (last song syndrome) for the past few days. I’ve been hearing their song “Picture Picture” in NU 107 for the past weeks and just recently got a hold of their entire album. My friends hate me for singing the “Picture Picture” over and over again. Haha, sorry friends, but I can’t really get it out of my head!

Their album contains 16 tracks but some of them are short fillers. When I first played the album, I can’t help but laugh because of the funny mismatched lyrics and situations combined with girly-man voices, melodious tunes and pop goth. It’s like hearing Ang Bandang Shirley (without a real female vocalist like Selena), slightly tamed Parokya ni Edgar in the Khangkungkernitz era, pop attitude of the Eraserheads in the Ultraelectromagneticpop era, Dodong Cruz and Queen in one. Interesting huh? They definitely reminded me of the Pinoy 90′s rock era. Their band formed in 2004 and when I learned about this, where the f*ck was I and didn’t discover this way, way back? I guess I was in Pinoy Rock hiatus then. Read the rest of this entry »

Doki Band in Saguijo 2

Just before the Holy Week long weekend, I went to Saguijo together with gig buddy and partner Karla to watch my friend’s band perform for the first time. My friend’s name is Doki (her nickname) and her band’s name is same as hers. Anyway, I’ll disclose that this is a super biased review of the band because she’s my kabarkada since High School but it’s up to you to discover how unique and cool the sound of this band is. Urbandub is now celebrating its 10th year anniversary and they have something new for the Dubistas here in Manila and even abroad. The band just recently taped their online concert that will be shown in Pelicola.tv. This was made possible through Globe Tattoo and Pelicola.tv and guess what, this is URBANDUB’S FIRST DECADE ONLINE CONCERT which will be shown on APRIL 2010. Thanks to my friend Coy Caballes from Globe for giving me a chance to participate in this rare event. I really got excited because I have been listening to Urbandub since I first heard “Soul Searching” and didn”t stop raving about this band. Read the rest of this entry »

Obsidian Poster

Obsidian Bar and Grill will be the newest rock gig destination in Manila located specifically at the Ortigas Home Depot. We are inviting all of you to come and join us at the Weekend Launch Party on March 12 and 13. You better not miss this because really cool local bands will be performing (please see poster above)! Not sure yet about the entrance fee but I guess it’s just the normal P150. The food here is great and the beer is really cheap so this is the place to be when you want to watch local bands and chill out.

Hope to see you there!

You may see the map going to Obsidian at www.obsidianbarph.com.

Sights and Sounds of UP Fair

UP Fair Crowd

UP Fair is one of my most anticipated events every year. Aside from the simple affiliation of being a UP alumna, I’ve had a blast during UP Fairs during my college years and even after graduation. It’s really different whenever I’m there. I feel I’m home. Even though many people say that UP fairs are always dangerous and unsafe to go, I really don’t care. During UP Fairs, the crowds are always a mixture of the grungy emo kids, UP and non-UP students, yuppies, artists and many more. Watching bands while I am at the audience is always a thrill for me and it really doesn’t matter if I stand for a couple of hours.  Read the rest of this entry »

11th Red Horse Muziklaban

Moshpit2

Red Horse Muziklaban is one of the most anticipated rock events since it started because this is where amateur bands are able to showcase their talents and be known in the rock scene. Last January 30th, me and fellow bloggers such as Juned and Karla were able to cover the Red Horse Muziklaban 2009 held at the Metrowalk Parking Lot. I felt that this was a much better location than at the Marikina Sports Complex last year. I hope that they continue to have this venue for the succeeding Red Horse Muziklaban events. Puma Presents: Drip x 3

posted by Sharlyne Ang on January 21st, 2010 under Events, Filipino Bands, sound trip

drip

Drip has become one of my favorite local acts in Manila because of their distinct electronica sound and the soothing voice of Beng. It’s exciting to know that the band will be launching 3 music videos for their songs “Turning Grey”, “Blind” and “Bloodletting”. All of these 3 videos took 2 years in the making so I am quite excited to finally see those songs as music videos. Another good news is that they will be performing some of their new songs from their Spanish album which they collaborated with Instituto Cervantes as a tribute to a Spanish poet Miguel Hernandez. The event is free so anybody can come and join us. By the way, this event is sponsored by Puma. Read the rest of this entry »
