Too bad that most of the roadies don’t have health benefits that would at least protect them from the expensive hospital bills in case something happens to them. This is the reason why Rock Ed organized this kind of event to raise funds for them to have health cards. The event was held at Mag:Net High Street last May 9th. Different bands participated in this event to give health cards to their respective roadies. I also helped in going around with a donation box to add money to the health fund.

The show started almost 10:00 pm. I was one of the earliest people there; I arrived with Karla at 7:30 pm. First band that performed was Archipelago, then followed by Peryodiko. Before Pupil went up the stage, Karla and I approached Ely to let the pieces of Ely’s jacket signed. Pupil performed next and it seemed that the crowd were waiting for Pupil (a lot of them were some familiar faces from the Eheads and Pupil mailing lists). Terno Recording Bands such as Paramita and Up Dharma Down performed next. Armi Millare of Up Dharma Down just had her hair cut. As you can see in the video, she now has a super short hair. It actually looked good on her . While Up Dharma Down was setting up, Gang Badoy showed her talent by playing the keyboards and singing as well.

After the Terno set, it was time for Radioactive Sago and Itchyworms to perform. The roadies of Itchyworms danced onstage in the tune of “Freak Out”. If you have watched the official video of that song, you can see that they really danced there. Watch Itchyworms’s performance here.

The Soupstar set it up next. These bands came from another Rock Ed fund raising event in Marikina. Gaijin (Raymund’s new band), Imago, Sandwich and the last band to perform was Pedicab. Sandwich performed Eraserheads songs such as  “Insomya” and “Alkohol”. Pedicab did a remix of their popular songs. It was a nice way to end the evening .

I don’t know how much the funds were raised during the night. The target was Php 40,000 and the last amount I heard that time was Php 18,000. I am guessing that there will be a “Two for the Roadie” gig next!

But for this article, I will be talking about a new Pinoy band called Peryodiko. The band is composed of Vin Dancel (lead vocals, guitars), Simon Tan  (bass, vocals), Kakoy Legaspi (lead guitar, vocals) and Abe Billano (drums, vocals). These guys are already superstars in their own way. Just to give you a background on each member: Vin Dancel was the lead vocalist of the now defunct Twisted Halo, brother of Ebe Dancel (of Sugarfree) and husband of Kris Gorra-Dancel (of Cambio, Fatal Posporos and Duster); Kakoy Legaspi used to play the lead guitars for Barbie’s Cradle and Rivermaya and I believe currently plays for a band called Salindiwa; Simon Tan is a great bass player associated with bands such as Lampano Alley, Johnny Allegre, Wdouji, UP Jazz Ensemble and many others; lastly, Abe Billano used to play drums for Dong Abay and Twisted Halo. Wow, that’s what I call a superstar line up.

I have seen Peryodiko perform once during the first leg of the Anabel Bosch tribute gig at Big Sky Mind last January 3rd. The picture here was taken through my camera phone during that gig; I was seated comfortably at the sofa . I have been hearing raves about this band since last year and am glad to get the chance to see them perform live.

I was actually wondering why they’re called Peryodiko. I haven’t talked to them in person so I’ll probably make some hypothesis here and hope to verify it when them when I get the chance to chat with them . I am thinking that they named their band as Peryodiko because their songs show everyday realities that people undergo. Their songs can be categorized as “comfort songs” ( like food, we have comfort food to make us feel happy).

Agawan Base – Peryodiko
The album is composed of 11 tracks and their carrier single is “Agawan Base” (in English, Stealing Base). Based from the lyrics, I could say that it is about accepting the consequences of whatever we do. People around us can just be spectators of our lives but basically we are the masters of our own world. Life is like this game wherein the goal is to catch the opponents or try to steal the opponents’ base to succeed. This song will really give you the LSS (last song syndrome) and one of my favorites in the album as well.

Another favorite song of mine is “Huminga” which again is having a reality check among ourselves as humans. Sometimes we pressure ourselves on becoming perfect but in reality we are not. We may experience some achievements during the day but before we sleep but we must still remember to put our two feet on the ground.

“Kumapit Ka Tuwing Lunes” is one of the slow songs that I like in the album. I’m not really sure why the writer suggests to ‘hold on every Monday’ (the literal meaning of the title ) probably it’s because Monday is the first day of the week? Haha, I’m not really sure. This song actually sort of reminds me of Apo Hiking Society and Eraserheads. Hmm maybe the 70′s feel and the melodious tune of it?

One of the independent music industry’s rock goddesses suffered anneurysm last January 1, 2009 as she was watching television with her daughter and complaint about a terrible headache. For those of you who may not be familiar with her, she sings with bands such as Tropical Depression, Electrikoolaid and Analog. When the news broke out that she was rushed to the hospital, her friends from the music industry made the effort of organizing benefit gigs for her and the very first leg of the benefit gig was held at Big Sky Mind in Quezon City. Rocked had the first benefit gig and the bands who performed were The Dawn, Chilitees, Cambio, Peryodiko and many more. Yours truly was there to support the cause. We came there early so we got the chance to sit on the couch . Any form of donation was made possible, they even auctioned toys, basketball cards, lap dances, etc.

Here is the list of the upcoming Rock Bosch gigs for this month. If you can attend all of them the better! As we all know hospital and medicine expenses are really expensive and you can help by just watching the gigs listed below. I believe that there are still additional gigs and events for Anabel but these are the confirmed ones:
