Isn’t it cool seeing and hearing your favorite bands perform cover songs every once in a while? Puma paved way for some of our local bands to let Pupil, Imago, Up Dharma Down, Drip, Taken by Cars, Camerawalls and Sleepwalk Circus show their own renditions of classic pop and rock songs. I got the chance to be invited to the Puma Archive Uncovered Manila gig last September 18 (I know it’s a month late, I’m a full time worker ok? ).

If you’re going to ask me, my favorite cover song would be “Ready to Go” by Taken By Cars which was originally sung by Republica. I believe that the song really suits them because Sarah’s energy matches the fast beats of the song. Plus, I got the chance to see the their new bassist/singer Isa Garcia perform for the first time!

It was unexpected but Up Dharma Down covered a Hall and Oates song, “One on One”. Armi Millare gave the song a different perspective. Well, we know that Hall and Oates are males and when Armi sang the lyrics “One on One, I wanna play that game tonight”, it gave a bit of a kinky feeling.

On the other hand, Pupil decided to cover classic rock songs. They’re the last band to perform for the night and they covered 3 songs such as Queen’s “Under Pressure” and Alice Cooper’s “I Never Cry” and Simon and Garfunkel’s “Mrs. Robinson”. I liked all the songs they covered. They punkified “Mrs. Robinson”, I love it!

Drip performed “Dreams” of Fleetwood Mac and of course, they mixed it with their own electronic rendition. Beng’s voice is really breathtaking. I can’t help but stare at her with awe while listening to her.

The Camerawalls is a Brit rock sounding band and I was already assuming that they’ll be performing a song sounding Brit rock. They performed “That’s Entertainment”, a classic song originally performed by Paul Weller. I believe that they include this song during their usual bar gigs.

Imago performed their Filipino songs which they have already covered in their past albums such as “Bakit Ba Ganyan” and “Spoliarium”. I also like Sleepwalk Circus’ version of “Woman in Chains” by Tears for Fears. Armi Millare sang with them.

P. S. Thanks to Teresa Liwanag of Puma for the invitation!

Road managers a.k.a ‘roadies’ play a very important role for the bands. They are the ones who make sure that everything is ok before the band goes onstage. They help the band bring their equipments, make sure that their guitars are in tune, the amplifiers’ volume are just right, the band have their beer or water near them etc. I remembered Lourd de Veyra of Radioactive Sago Project said “Hindi kusang lilipad ang gitara kay Rico Blanco pagkatapos niyang kantahin ang linyang Liwanag… (from the song Liwanag sa Dilim) at hindi rin lulutang ang gitara kapag hinahagis ang gitara sa ere” – (it’s already paraphrased but it’s something like that ). It’s funny but it’s true. The roadies make sure that these rockstars can show off their rockstar stunts to the audience.

Too bad that most of the roadies don’t have health benefits that would at least protect them from the expensive hospital bills in case something happens to them. This is the reason why Rock Ed organized this kind of event to raise funds for them to have health cards. The event was held at Mag:Net High Street last May 9th. Different bands participated in this event to give health cards to their respective roadies. I also helped in going around with a donation box to add money to the health fund.

The show started almost 10:00 pm. I was one of the earliest people there; I arrived with Karla at 7:30 pm. First band that performed was Archipelago, then followed by Peryodiko. Before Pupil went up the stage, Karla and I approached Ely to let the pieces of Ely’s jacket signed. Pupil performed next and it seemed that the crowd were waiting for Pupil (a lot of them were some familiar faces from the Eheads and Pupil mailing lists). Watch Pupil’s performance here and below (it’s much longer)

Terno Recording Bands such as Paramita and Up Dharma Down performed next. Armi Millare of Up Dharma Down just had her hair cut. As you can see in the video, she now has a super short hair. It actually looked good on her . While Up Dharma Down was setting up, Gang Badoy showed her talent by playing the keyboards and singing as well.

Gang Badoy singing and playing the keyboards

After the Terno set, it was time for Radioactive Sago and Itchyworms to perform. The roadies of Itchyworms danced onstage in the tune of “Freak Out”. If you have watched the official video of that song, you can see that they really danced there. Watch Itchyworms’s performance here.

The Soupstar set it up next. These bands came from another Rock Ed fund raising event in Marikina. Gaijin (Raymund’s new band), Imago, Sandwich and the last band to perform was Pedicab. Sandwich performed Eraserheads songs such as “Insomya” and “Alkohol”. Pedicab did a remix of their popular songs. It was a nice way to end the evening .

I don’t know how much the funds were raised during the night. The target was Php 40,000 and the last amount I heard that time was Php 18,000. I am guessing that there will be a “Two for the Roadie” gig next!

The second leg of the series of benefit gigs for Anabel Bosch happened last January 9 at Saguijo Cafe in Makati. The band line up was really good and because of that Saguijo was filled with people as early as 8 pm. Usually the place gets filled up around 11pm -12 midnight. And the funny thing was, the Eraserheads Mailing Listers (a.k.a Circus Mailing Listers) actually filled half of the place. Of course even though the band had already disbanded we would still support the individual member’s respective bands and at that night Sandwich (Raymund’s band) and Pupil ( Ely’s band) was there to perform. There aren’t any chairs left to sit so Karla and I decided to stand infront of the mic. (If you have been in Saguijo, you know what I’m talking about) Well, Saguijo is just a small place and there’s no stage so from where I am standing at that time, I was literally infront of the vocalist ( So for more picture opportunity for me! )

This was a Rock Ed gig but Gang Badoy wasn’t there yet so there were proxy hosts for her. They already have sponsors that night such as Slenda and Enduranz, so the hosts had some games and gift packs to give away. I actually won a Slenda DVD (it’s an advantage being right infront of the host haha). Well anyway, here is the order of the bands: South Superhighway, Sugarfree, Top Junk, Chillitees, Itchyworms, Pupil, Sandwich and Join the Club.

Elmer Ona of South Superhighway or SLEX

Sugarfree – Ebe Dancel (vocals), Jal Taguibao (guitars) and Kaka Quisumbing (drums)

South Superhighway is a band composed of members namely Elmer Ona on vocals/guitars, Ben Riego on guitars, Vhall Riddle on bass and Shinji Tanaka on drums. It’s my first time to see them perform. Their songs are feel good, not so heavy. After SLEX, Sugarfree performed their old songs like Burnout, Kwarto, Prom etc. They also performed a new song entitled “Hay Buhay” from their newest album which will be released this year. It’s a positive song about life. Ebe even forgot the title when I asked him about it. hehe. Have a sneak peek of it below

Marizel Sarangelo (or popularly known as the comedienne Tuesday Vargas) of Top Junk.

Top Junk is a pop/punk/rock band. It’s sometimes known as Tuesday’s band because of her popularity as a comedienne. But dude, she can sing and rock! This isn’t the first time I saw them perform and they’re really good! Other members are Dennis Leung (drums), Tim Panganiban (guitars and not present during the gig) and Jerico Placido (bass).

Chillitees – Uela Basco (vocals), Allen Umali (bass), Dexter Aguila (drums) and Dan Gil (keyboards/vocals)

Chillitees brought the funky soul mood to the audience. Another great band here than never fails to make me funk a little bit. hehe.

Itchyworms – Jugs Jugueta (vocals), Kelvin Yu (bass), Chino Singson (guitars) and Jazz Nicholas (drums)

One of Itchyworms’s staff actually showed us the dancesteps in the video “Freak Out“. It was a fun set, as usual.

Pupil – (on photo) Ely Buendia (vocals/guitar), Yan Yuzon (guitars), Wendell Garcia (drums)

Teacher’s Pet Live – Pupil

The 2 bands that everybody’s been waiting for are next. Everybody was screaming as each member of Pupil came in most especially when Ely Buendia entered the scene. Oh yes, THE Ely Buendia. It’s nice that I am literally infront of him . I have the best view. Wehehe. He was wearing a cap, I was hoping he would remove it but unfortunately he didn’t. This was actually my first time to see them perform in Saguijo. They don’t usually play there.

Sandwich – (on photo) Real life couple Raymund Marasigan (vocals/guitars) and Myrene Academia (bass) with Mong Alcaraz (guitars)

Next was Sandwich. Raymund, as always, entered the room all smiling. The band performed songs from their old albums such as Butterfly Carnival and 2 Trick Pony. They sang my current favorite song “Selos” and eventually became “controversial” because Raymund and Myrene kissed! Hehe. Not just a normal kiss but french kissed. I was taking a video of it (in case you want to see the video, kindly see below) and was not able to take a still picture. Karla was able to capture the moment click here to view it Anyway, watching a Sandwich set is never boring as Raymund always like to experiment especially in small venues. While he was singing 2 Trick Pony, he inserted the verses of a song he composed when he was still with the Eheads entitled “Alkohol”. Maybe he did it because lots of Eheads listers were there but it was cool combining the 2 songs .

The last to perform was Join the Club. I was not able to see them anymore as I was so tired of standing up for 5 whole hours! Well, I know that this gig was very successful. Even though Anabel is not with us anymore, I know she’s happy seeing everyone enjoying the gigs for her.

Just last Saturday, October 24, Ely Buendia has returned to performing live again just like Superman. He performed live of course with his band, Pupil in Eat Bulaga. After performing “Disconnection Notice” with Pupil, he sang “Superproxy” with Francis M. It was also Francis M.’s first TV performance after recovering from his illness. Both of the OPM icons were very happy that they are back in the live scene again. They even hugged each other after doing “Superproxy”.

This was actually an Ely Buendia filled weekend because after the Eat Bulaga stint his interviews in Startalk and Showbiz Central were shown and then come Sunday, Pupil guested in SOP. Lots of revelations were mentioned by Ely in those interviews especially about the Eraserheads and his relationship with his manager-cum-partner Diane Ventura. Rumor has it that they have ended their relationship but Ely really didn’t answer it directly but instead uttered:

I would not call it ‘Rough’. Everybody has to do what’s best for what you think is best. She is still my manager and she has always been my manager. She has guided me from the very start ever since the Mongols days, up to the Pupil days, up to the reunion. We are very, very good friends and we’re the best of friends. We have a special relationship. She is the mother of my son and there is no person I want to work with or be with now than her.

As for the next Eraserheads reunion, Ely said that it’s already over and that 15 songs are enough. He also mentioned that he has revived his friendship with his former bandmates.

Ely will be doing gigs with his band but not as busy as what he was doing before. He’s trying to get back in shape. Of course the doctors advised him not to be involved in too strenuous activities. I’m happy he’s back and will be watching Pupil’s gig at Club Dredd in Eastwood on November 8th.

Here are the videos. Enjoy.

** special thanks to DCRJPinoybiscuits03 and yusibear00, videos were grabbed from their Youtube.
