Bands have their own style, whether they consciously or unconsciously thought of it. I just loved how band members themselves take the effort of choosing the clothes they wear whenever they go on stage. Nothing really extravagant is needed, for as long as it looks good and fits well on them.

A few days ago, I was invited to the Create Your Style event of Puma in Greenbelt 5. Two of the band endorsers of Puma, Up Dharma Down and Drip, performed to show their Puma style. Honestly, I was quite excited to see them again because they’re two of my favorite local bands.

Karla and I were among the first ones to arrive. Thought we’re gonna be late since I left the office late. Good thing I didn’t need to travel far because it’s just in Greenbelt 5. So while waiting, we were enjoying our free booze and food there . Anyway, Drip performed first. The vocalist, Beng, was wearing a high-waisted maong pair of shorts with multiple buttons on the waistline. It was paired with a striped tank top tucked in. She matched it with a classic Puma sneakers.

Armi Millare of Up Dharma Down

Then, Up Dharma Down performed their own songs. It was only the 3 of them, Carlos Tanada wasn’t there. Armi was wearing a black hoodie jacket with silver outline and matched it with black short shorts. Armi was given Puma ears and wore it until the end of their set (meow, Armi!).

Me with Meow Meow Armi

So if you like to win P20,000 worth of Puma stuff, just drop by at any Puma store and create your own style with Puma Fall Holiday 09 collection. You don’t need to buy the items that you’ll be choosing. If your style is chosen, it will be featured at the next year’s Puma Style Guide! This contest will only run until December 22. So better go to your nearest Puma store!

UPDATED: THE CONTEST IS EXTENDED UNTIL JANUARY 31, 2010!

Isn’t it cool seeing and hearing your favorite bands perform cover songs every once in a while? Puma paved way for some of our local bands to let Pupil, Imago, Up Dharma Down, Drip, Taken by Cars, Camerawalls and Sleepwalk Circus show their own renditions of classic pop and rock songs. I got the chance to be invited to the Puma Archive Uncovered Manila gig last September 18 (I know it’s a month late, I’m a full time worker ok? ).

If you’re going to ask me, my favorite cover song would be “Ready to Go” by Taken By Cars which was originally sung by Republica. I believe that the song really suits them because Sarah’s energy matches the fast beats of the song. Plus, I got the chance to see the their new bassist/singer Isa Garcia perform for the first time!

It was unexpected but Up Dharma Down covered a Hall and Oates song, “One on One”. Armi Millare gave the song a different perspective. Well, we know that Hall and Oates are males and when Armi sang the lyrics “One on One, I wanna play that game tonight”, it gave a bit of a kinky feeling.

On the other hand, Pupil decided to cover classic rock songs. They’re the last band to perform for the night and they covered 3 songs such as Queen’s “Under Pressure” and Alice Cooper’s “I Never Cry” and Simon and Garfunkel’s “Mrs. Robinson”. I liked all the songs they covered. They punkified “Mrs. Robinson”, I love it!

Drip performed “Dreams” of Fleetwood Mac and of course, they mixed it with their own electronic rendition. Beng’s voice is really breathtaking. I can’t help but stare at her with awe while listening to her.

The Camerawalls is a Brit rock sounding band and I was already assuming that they’ll be performing a song sounding Brit rock. They performed “That’s Entertainment”, a classic song originally performed by Paul Weller. I believe that they include this song during their usual bar gigs.

Imago performed their Filipino songs which they have already covered in their past albums such as “Bakit Ba Ganyan” and “Spoliarium”. I also like Sleepwalk Circus’ version of “Woman in Chains” by Tears for Fears. Armi Millare sang with them.

P. S. Thanks to Teresa Liwanag of Puma for the invitation!

Road managers a.k.a ‘roadies’ play a very important role for the bands. They are the ones who make sure that everything is ok before the band goes onstage. They help the band bring their equipments, make sure that their guitars are in tune, the amplifiers’ volume are just right, the band have their beer or water near them etc. I remembered Lourd de Veyra of Radioactive Sago Project said “Hindi kusang lilipad ang gitara kay Rico Blanco pagkatapos niyang kantahin ang linyang Liwanag… (from the song Liwanag sa Dilim) at hindi rin lulutang ang gitara kapag hinahagis ang gitara sa ere” – (it’s already paraphrased but it’s something like that ). It’s funny but it’s true. The roadies make sure that these rockstars can show off their rockstar stunts to the audience.

Too bad that most of the roadies don’t have health benefits that would at least protect them from the expensive hospital bills in case something happens to them. This is the reason why Rock Ed organized this kind of event to raise funds for them to have health cards. The event was held at Mag:Net High Street last May 9th. Different bands participated in this event to give health cards to their respective roadies. I also helped in going around with a donation box to add money to the health fund.

The show started almost 10:00 pm. I was one of the earliest people there; I arrived with Karla at 7:30 pm. First band that performed was Archipelago, then followed by Peryodiko. Before Pupil went up the stage, Karla and I approached Ely to let the pieces of Ely’s jacket signed. Pupil performed next and it seemed that the crowd were waiting for Pupil (a lot of them were some familiar faces from the Eheads and Pupil mailing lists). Watch Pupil’s performance here and below (it’s much longer)

Terno Recording Bands such as Paramita and Up Dharma Down performed next. Armi Millare of Up Dharma Down just had her hair cut. As you can see in the video, she now has a super short hair. It actually looked good on her . While Up Dharma Down was setting up, Gang Badoy showed her talent by playing the keyboards and singing as well.

Gang Badoy singing and playing the keyboards

After the Terno set, it was time for Radioactive Sago and Itchyworms to perform. The roadies of Itchyworms danced onstage in the tune of “Freak Out”. If you have watched the official video of that song, you can see that they really danced there. Watch Itchyworms’s performance here.

The Soupstar set it up next. These bands came from another Rock Ed fund raising event in Marikina. Gaijin (Raymund’s new band), Imago, Sandwich and the last band to perform was Pedicab. Sandwich performed Eraserheads songs such as “Insomya” and “Alkohol”. Pedicab did a remix of their popular songs. It was a nice way to end the evening .

I don’t know how much the funds were raised during the night. The target was Php 40,000 and the last amount I heard that time was Php 18,000. I am guessing that there will be a “Two for the Roadie” gig next!

Up Dharma Down is definitely going up the charts right now because they have already released their sophomore album, ‘Bipolar’ last October 24 at the Hexagon Lounge, RCBC Plaza. Many people attended the said event and there’s even still a line outside Hexagon Lounge which unfortunately couldn’t be accommodated by the venue anymore. Tickets were sold at Php 150 however people who will be availing the CD at the event will also get the limited edition DVD which actually cost Php 500 ( that’s inclusive of one free beer or iced tea). Limited editions ‘Bipolar’ shirts were also being sold courtesy of Team Manila at Php 550 each.

The venue was packed with lots of people so we really sneaked our way just to be at least infront of the stage. I was quite short so I just have to just listen to the music. Armi Millare looked different that night, all made up, with her hair cut short ( most likely a bob cut) and she was wearing a backless short black dress paired with black stockings. Also Armi was already talking to the audience. Well, having watched her numerous times during gigs, she’s not really much of a talker. It’s really the music that is being used to communicate to the audience.

I have already listened to the album, probably I’ll make a review in the next few days ( or weeks, hehe)
