I’ll be a vampire again in a few days…

It’s my last day in the morning shift yesterday (June 27) and officially on July 1 at 1:00 am, I will be working in the night shift.

After my shift yesterday, I just did some errands for work ( which isn’t finished yet.. hay) ate Margherita pizza at Green Tomato in Philam Building. After the pizza, Karla and I hung out at Krispy Kreme Ayala and used their wifi for free. We were actually waiting for some of our friends then afterwards we went straight to the Coke Zero Bloggers’ Party at Taste Asia in SM Hypermart ( in SM Mall of Asia). For that party, we were now with John and Baby. Continue reading “I’ll be a vampire again in a few days…”

UP Closed to Brightest of the Poor

As I was reading my inbox in Multiply, my friend Mica posted this article in her Multiply blog. You may read the article here.

I must agree with Mica, that it is very disappointing to know that due to the tuition increase and also the new STFAP ( Socialized Tuition Fee Assistance program) the brightest of the brightest students from other regions of the Philippines could not maximize their potentials. When I was still at the University more than 2 years ago, I was able to hear from Prof. Solita Monsod the rationale as to why UP needs to increase its tuition fees. According to her, the tuition fee at that time Php 300.00 per unit has never been changed eversince. Now based on the socio-economic conditions at the time that Php 300.00 per unit has started and until last year, there has been a great change in the societal conditions. So, according to her it is the right time to increase the fees. Well, she’s coming from the economic perspective. Also, teachers need to be compensated so as to prevent being ‘pirated’ by other “more” expensive schools. She has an argument, however thinking about the current condition of UP, it is very much concentrated on avoiding “brain drain” and thus leaving the students behind because they need to pay higher tuition.

I thought that the tuition hike is effective for all levels ( meaning Master’s and Doctorate degrees), instead it’s just for bachelor’s degrees which is quite ironic because usually those taking their MA and PhDs are also working at the same time. I have a high school batchmate who is currently taking her MA in Sociology in UPD and she said that her tution is Php 500.00 per unit ( the same as the previous years). According to her, it’s just the undergraduate students who will pay the 300% increase in tuition.

UP is now the official national university as mandated by law. What’s the sense in calling it such when you do not give opportunities for unfortunate adolescents? Think about it UP officials, you spent a lot for the UP centennial activities. Where should the funds go? To the fireworks, parades, parties or should you allocate it for the poor bright students who aspire to study in UP?

UP @ 100

UP is celebrating its centennial year today! And just last month, as per “University of the Philippines Charter of 2008”, UP is officially the national university of the Philippines. This is indeed a good news since bill was being deliberated long enough. Well the charter isn’t all about UP being a national university. There are also some changes on some things that seem obsolete on the bill. Imagine, it was just only now that the charter was updated ever since it was created in 1908. Also there are other factors to consider in changing the charter since it would involve the senate and congress ( oh yeah, they are so quick in making laws… ehem sarcastically speaking). Happy Birthday Papa!

( The last travel me and my Papa were together, cruise in Singapore)

Today is my Papa’s birthday. He’d been gone for about 3 years now. For the people who know me, you would probably know my story. I was looking for pictures for another blog post awhile ago then I saw my dad’s pictures and decided to make this entry for him. I miss my dad. How I wish I could turn back time to make things right, unfortunately I can’t do it anymore. I want to hug him and tell him that I love him. We were not close while he was still living, I actually despised him. I realized that it’s too late when he had gone to heaven. Also, happy father’s day papa. Continue reading “Happy Birthday Papa!”

Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters

I have just finished reading Sarah Waters’ “Tipping the Velvet”. Actually this has been long overdue since I started reading that i think late December. Let me give you a little background about the author and the story.

Sarah Waters is a known lesbian author born in Neyland, Pembrokeshire in 1966. “Tipping the Velvet” is actually her first novel that she published in 1999. The story was inspired by her PhD thesis about lesbian historical fiction.** Continue reading “Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters”
